Winners Chosen in Jubilee 2000 Writing Competition

Ottawa (CCCB)– Nine young Catholics from across Canada have been declared winners in a national Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 writing competition. The young people, between the ages of six and seventeen, come from across Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia.

The competition is the first stage of an international writing contest organized by the Vatican to help celebrate Jubilee 2000. The winning compositions have been forwarded to the Central Committee of the Great Jubilee 2000 as Canada’s official entries in the competition.

There were three winners in each of three categories established by the Vatican committee: children, pre-adolescents and adolescents.

Young people were invited to submit entries in either prose or poetry on the following themes: children – the Jubilee as a wonderful celebration and source of happiness; pre-adolescents – Jesus as the centre of this celebration and the Gospel as the guide to human existence; and adolescents – the Jubilee as an encounter with Jesus leading to renewal and commitment to justice and the rights of the human person.

Three world champions and winners from each category will be chosen by an international committee in Rome, with those winners receiving their prizes in Rome. The main prize will be a week-long stay in Rome for the winner along with two family members.
