The Catholic Church in Canada

Bishops are the successors of the Apostles and thus guarantee the apostolic succession in unity with the Roman Pontiff. Although Catholic clergy and members of consecrated life had already been present in what was to be Canada, the Church became officially established in this country in 1658 with the appointment of Saint François de Laval as Bishop and Vicar General of New France.
