Episcopal appointment for the Archdiocese of Quebec
Thursday, December 12 2024December 12, 2024, Ottawa – Today, His Holiness Pope Francis named Father Jean Tailleur as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Quebec. At the time of his appointment, Bishop-elect Tailleur was serving as Vicar General and Moderator of the diocesan curia, a position he has held since February 2024, before which he had been diocesan Chancellor since 2011.
The eldest in a family of four children, Bishop-elect Tailleur was born to Jean-Marie Tailleur and Fernande Jobin in Quebec City on 5 November 1963. In 1983, he entered the Grand Séminaire de Québec, where he began his theological training. He was ordained to the diaconate on 6 May 1990 and to the priesthood on 25 November of the same year, after obtaining Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Theology from Laval University.
From 1990 to 1996, he was coordinator of pastoral animation at École primaire des Loutres, while serving as curate at Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens parish in Charlesbourg. From 1996 to 2000, he was pastoral animator at the Petit Séminaire de Québec. He was also Reserve Chaplain for the Voltigeurs de Québec regiment of the 35th Canadian Brigade from 1997 to 2013. From 2000 to 2008, he was responsible for diocesan pastoral animation, focusing in particular on youth ministry.
After obtaining a Licentiate in Canon Law from Saint Paul University in 2011, he was appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Québec on 25 May 2011, a position he held until 31 July 2024.
The Archdiocese of Quebec is the oldest episcopal see in Canada. It is made up of 40 parishes and missions, 251 diocesan priests, 139 priests in consecrated life, 76 permanents deacons, 116 men and 1,498 women who are members of institutes of consecrated life serving in monastic communities or religious orders, and some 1,000,849 catholic laity.
