Death of the Most Rev. Eugène Tremblay, Bishop Emeritus of Amos

The Most Reverend Eugène Tremblay, Bishop Emeritus of Amos, Québec, died February 18, 2026, at the age of 89. He served as Bishop of Amos from 2004 to 2011, when he reached the age of retirement for Bishops (75) under the 1983 Code of Canon Law (Canon 401 § 1).

Born in 1936 in Saint-Hilarion, in the region of Charlevoix, Quebec, Most Rev. Tremblay was ordained to the priesthood in 1962, and his episcopal ministry was inaugurated in 1995. He completed classical studies at the Petit Séminaire de Chicoutimi et Québec, and theological studies at the Grand Séminaire de Québec. He was a teacher and student life coordinator at the Petit Séminaire de Québec from 1962 to 1969. From 1969 to 1972, he pursued graduate studies in psychology at the University of Ottawa, culminating in the acquisition of a master’s degree in 1972. Subsequently, he worked as a high school teacher and student life counselor from 1976 to 1981, followed by a role as a psychologist at the diocesan centre in Cap-Rouge. Between 1981 and 1983, he served as the secretary-coordinator and coordinator for the Région pastorale du Plateau.

He served the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) as a member of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy (French Sector), from 2000 to 2005. From 2002 to 2006, he served as the CCCB liaison Bishop for French-language seminaries. From 2003 to 2005, he was Co-Chair of the CCCB Special Taskforce for the review of From Pain to Hope, the CCCB’s first publication on the prevention of sexual abuse by clergy. He also served as a member of the former Episcopal Commission for the Evangelization of Peoples from 2005 to 2008. From 2008 to 2011, he was a member of the CCCB Permanent Council.
