Father Paul Kavanagh Elected Archdiocesan Administrator for the Archdiocese of Edmonton

Sunday, May 25, 2025

Subsequent to the installation of the Most Reverend Richard Smith as Archbishop of Vancouver this past 23 May 2025, the College of Consultors of the Archdiocese of Edmonton elected the Reverend Paul Kavanagh as Archdiocesan Administrator of Edmonton, as required by Canon Law (c. 421 §1). His term began immediately following his election. Father Kavanagh will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Archdiocese until a new Archbishop is appointed.

While an administrator exercises the authority of a Bishop, his responsibilities are limited in scope. His primary role is to ensure the continuity of existing ministries and oversee financial matters. In keeping with canon law, he is not ordinarily permitted to initiate new programs, alter parish boundaries, or make long-term appointments.

Born on Bell Island, Newfoundland, and raised in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Father Kavanagh graduated from Archbishop Jordan Catholic High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at the Seminary of Christ the King in Mission, British Columbia, followed by a Master of Divinity from Newman Theological College. Ordained on May 22, 2002, he has served in both urban and rural parishes. In 2008, he was appointed Director of the Office of Divine Worship and, in 2018, Rector of St. Joseph’s Basilica. Since 2021, he has worked full-time as Episcopal Vicar for Clergy and has led the Archdiocesan Mission Leadership Team.

Archbishop Smith led Edmonton’s Catholic community for fifteen years, shaping its pastoral priorities, and initiating the Jubilee Year of Hope that remains ongoing. With his departure, the offices of Vicar General and Episcopal Vicar became vacant, placing added responsibility on the administrator. While the Judicial Vicar and Chancellor remain, Fr. Kavanagh will rely on his team to ensure diocesan operations continue smoothly.

We offer our prayers and best wishes to Father Kavanagh and to the Archdiocese of Edmonton as they navigate this time of transition and look forward to welcoming their next Archbishop.
