New President and Governing Committee for International Catholic Migration Commission

Dr Anne Therese Gallagher-webThe Council of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) has elected Dr. Anne Therese Gallagher as the new ICMC President. The Council also appointed the members of its Governing Committee which include as before His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops is a member of ICMC and is represented on its Governing Committee by Cardinal Collins and on its Council by Deacon Rudy M. Ovcjak, Director of the Office for Refugees of the Archdiocese of Toronto. The ICMC Council also ratified the mandate of its General Secretary, Msgr. Robert J. Vitillo, who has been in office since June 2016. Dr. Gallagher is an Australian-born lawyer and an expert on migration, human rights and the administration of criminal justice. She also assists the Holy See in its efforts to address human trafficking, and serves as a member of the Archbishop of Sydney’s Taskforce on Modern Slavery.

The ICMC mission is to protect and serve uprooted people, including refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, victims of human trafficking, and migrants — regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality. Its former President was the late Mr. Peter Sutherland, an Irish barrister who had to resign from office during 2017 because of illness. Its interim President has been His Eminence John Cardinal Njue, Archbishop of Nairobi, Kenya.
