(CCCB – Ottawa)… Most Reverend Hubert O’Connor, O.M.I., Bishop Emeritus of Prince George, British Columbia, died on 24 July 2007 from a heart attack at the age of 79.

Funeral services for Bishop O’Connor will be held on Tuesday, 7 August 2007 at 10:00 a.m., at St. Augustines’s Parish in Vancouver, BC. He will be buried in the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Cemetery in Mission, British Columbia.

Born in Huntingdon, Quebec, Bishop O’Connor was a member of the religious community of the Oblate of Mary Immaculate. Ordained to the priesthood in 1955, he mainly exercised his pastoral ministry with Aboriginal communities before being named Bishop of Whitehorse in October 1971. Fifteen years later, in June 1986, he was named Bishop of Prince George, a seat he held until his resignation in July 1991.

With this nomination, Bishop Cadieux is now also the Bishop of Hearst, succeeding Most Reverend André Vallée, P.M.E., who retired in November 2005. Bishop Cadieux will remain Bishop of Moosonee, which is united “in persona episcopi” with the Diocese of Hearst (in the person of Bishop Cadieux).

Bishop Cadieux was born in 1940 in Alfred, Ontario. A member of the religious community of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1966 and appointed Bishop of Moosonee in 1991.

The Diocese of Hearst has 30 diocesan priests, 7 religious Sisters, 3 permanent deacons and 15 lay pastoral assistants who serve a Catholic population of 32,000 in 28 parishes and missions. North of Hearst, the Diocese of Moosonee has a Catholic population of 4,000, mainly Aboriginal Peoples, in 18 parishes and missions.

The ordination of Father Kenneth Nowakowski as Bishop of the Ukrainian Eparchy of New Westminster, in British-Columbia, will take place in Saint Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Vancouver, Tuesday 24 July 2007, at 3:00 p.m.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Fr. Nowakowski on 31 May 2007.

Born 22 July 1947 at Lachine, Quebec, Bishop Champagne studied philosophy and theology in Ottawa before earning a doctorate in mission studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1975.

After his ordination in 1975 as a member of the Order of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (O.M.I.), he was a professor at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, and was involved in pastoral and vocational work, especially with youth. He was also closely associated with the Cursillo movement in the French sector of the Archdiocese of Ottawa, and worked in two parishes in Eastern Ontario.

The Archdiocese of Halifax has 63 diocesan priests, 12 priests, 244 Brothers and Sisters who are members of religious orders, 29 permanent deacons and 24 lay pastoral ministers serving a Catholic population of 161,000 in 74 parishes and missions. The Diocese of Yarmouth has 37,000 Catholics in 39 parishes and missions, served by 28 diocesan priests, 16 women religious, three permanent deacons and four lay pastoral ministers.

On 4 July 2007 Most Reverend Rémi Sainte-Marie, M.Afr., became Bishop of Lilongwe in Malawi, Africa. Born in 1938 in La Minerve, Quebec, Bishop Sainte-Marie has been a missionary in Malawi for 44 years.

There are currently 11 Canadians serving as Bishops outside Canada.

The new Bishop was born 25 February 1962 in Peterborough, Ontario. After further studies in Rome, he served in a parish in Huntsville, Ontario, from 1991 to 1994, when he returned to Rome to work in the Congregation for Oriental Churches. After returning to Canada in 2002, he did pastoral ministry first in Huntsville and then in Hastings, Ontario, as well as serving as the Chancellor for Spiritual Affairs and the Vicar General of the Diocese of Peterborough.

The Diocese of Pembroke, which also has parishes in Quebec, has 61 diocesan priests, two priests who are members of religious communities, 168 religious Sisters and Brothers, six permanent deacons and nine lay pastoral workers serving 67,870 Catholics in 58 parishes and missions.

Most Reverend Gérard Pettipas, C.Ss.R. (Grouard-McLennan), Most Reverend Thomas Collins (Toronto), Most Reverend Richard Smith (Edmonton), Most Reverend Terrence Prendergast, S.J. (Ottawa), and Most Reverend Brendan M. O’Brien (Kingston) will receive the pallium. From the Latin word for “cloak”, this mantle of white wool decorated with six crosses, shaped like a small stole, is worn over the shoulders by Popes and Metropolitan Archbishops during liturgical celebrations. The pallium is given personally to each Metropolitan Archbishop by the Holy Father.

The pallium is a sign of the special link that unites Metropolitan Archbishops with the chief pastor of the Church of Rome.

In less than a year, the 49th International Eucharistic Congress will be in full swing in the diocese of Quebec. The event will be held from 15 – 22 June 2008 and will coincide with the 400th anniversary of Quebec City.

Close to 12,000 participants from all over the world are expected to come for a week of celebrations, adoration, catechesis and cultural events. Large crowds are expected particularly the closing mass. Preceding the Congress is a theological and pastoral symposium aimed at deepening our knowledge of the Eucharistic Mystery.
