Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak
Archeparch of Winnipeg
Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada
233 Scotia Street
Winnipeg, Manitoba R2V 1V7
In the name of the Bishops who form the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, and in my own name, it gives me great pleasure to offer to you, to your fellow Bishops of the Metropolia of Winnipeg, and to all, priests and deacons, religious Sisters and Brothers, and Christ’s faithful lay people who form the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada today, sincere congratulations and best wishes on this occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the formal establishment of the official Church structures for the Ukrainian Catholic Church here in Canada.
Blessed Bishop Nykyta Budka, Archbishop Basil Ladyka and so many others, before them and with them, had struggled over more than sixty years to give pastoral care and to lay well the foundations of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in this new land. Pope Pius XII’s recognition of their work and of the coming to maturity of that work found expression in the establishment, on 3 November 1956, of the Metropolia of Winnipeg.
Your Grace, fourth in succession now to Blessed Bishop Nykyta, it falls to you to lead the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada as it continues along the path of faithful witness to Jesus Christ in the Byzantine tradition brought to the lands of Rus-Ukraine more than one thousand years ago and to the shores and prairies of Canada over one hundred years ago. May you, and all who form the Ukrainian Catholic Church here in Canada today, be faithful to what has been handed on to you and continue together in our common mission to proclaim Jesus Christ and his Good News as we advance along the way of our pilgrimage to our heavenly homeland.
Congratulations and many of God’s choicest blessings to all!
Sincerely and fraternally in the Lord,
+ André Gaumond
Archbishop of Sherbrooke
