Your Eminences:
On behalf of all your brother bishops in Canada who are united with you as the process begins for electing the 264th successor to Peter, I convey with their prayers the greetings and best wishes of the clergy, religious and all the faithful of our diocesan Churches.
The entire Church, in Canada and around the world, is focused in a special way at this time on the Lord’s mission to Peter to confirm his brethren in faith and to unite them in communion.
In thanking our heavenly Father for having given us a universal shepherd in the person of John Paul II who moved the hearts and consciences of billions of men and women around the world over the past 26 years, we implore the Holy Spirit to assist and guide you in your tremendous responsibilities for selecting the next Bishop of Rome who will continue to encourage humanity in the search for truth and in respect for human dignity.
Sincerely in Our Risen Lord,
+ Brendan M. O’Brien
Archbishop of St. John’s
President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
