Public Access to Safe Water at Risk: Churches Issue a Pastoral Letter and Demand Action
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) supports the Ecumenical Water Campaign launched on October 6, 2005 by Kairos and Development and Peace. Most Reverend Roger Ébacher, Archbishop of Gatineau-Hull, represented the Conference during the launching that took place in Ottawa. He was among a group of individuals that served as representatives of different Canadian churches.
The signatories, including CCCB President, Most Reverend André Gaumond, Archbishop of Sherbrooke, made public a declaration confirming that the water privatization is putting public access to safe water at risk in Canada and around the world. They called on the federal government to help prevent a worldwide water crisis by taking national and international action to ensure that water remains under public control with genuine community participation.
