The Catholic Organization for Life and Family Comment on the Supreme Court of Canada Decision in the Case of Her Majesty the Queen V John Robin Sharpe
The Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) is relieved that the Supreme Court of Canada has largely upheld the law against possession of child pornography. We have concerns, however, about the two exceptions the Court has made to the law, given the extreme vulnerability of children.
We affirm with many others that protecting the dignity, integrity, innocence and safety of children must outweigh the right to freedom of expression. Our social and law enforcement agencies require effective legal tools to eradicate the production and possession of child pornography which is so harmful to children. To tolerate pornography with its objectification and exploitation of children would send the wrong message to those who use it and be ultimately damaging to society as a whole.
The Catholic Organization for Life and Family was jointly founded by the Canadian Conference Of Catholic Bishops and the Knights of Columbus to promote respect for human life and human dignity and the essential role of the family.
