Urgent invitation from Pope Francis to pray with him on June 8, 2014

Friday, June 06 2014

pope francisPope Francis is asking the Presidents of Episcopal Conferences to invite Bishops, those in consecrated life and all the faithful to join him in prayer for the invocation of peace which is scheduled at the Vatican on June 8, 2014. The request has been sent to the world’s Episcopal Conferences by the Vatican diplomatic service. This is further to the Holy Father’s recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land when he invited Israeli President Shimon Peres, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and His Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, to visit the Holy See and pray for peace. The following is the invitation that has been issued for Catholics in our country and all Canadians by the Most Reverend Paul-André Durocher, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

durocheTogether with the Holy Father and all my brother Bishops, I urge Catholics and everyone of goodwill to join in prayer for the meeting at the Vatican this June 8 of His Holiness Pope Francis, His Excellency President Shimon Peres, and His Excellency President Mahmoud Abbas, together with His Holiness Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. For most Christians, this is the day of Pentecost, the feast of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters of chaos, bringing the universe into being, and continues to inspire prophets and leaders. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the Virgin Mary became the Mother of Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace. Transformed by the fire and the wind of the Spirit, the disciples of Christ become the community of faith and forgiveness. May the Holy Spirit encourage and strengthen this meeting at the Vatican and all efforts in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East for peace and justice, healing and reconciliation. May this day be an important moment for each of us as children of our heavenly Father and for all our world in experiencing and deepening God’s gift of peace.

+ Paul-André Durocher
Archbishop of Gatineau and
President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
