Archbishop Appointed for Sherbrooke
Friday, April 10 2026Ottawa – Today, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV appointed the Most Reverend Guy Boulanger as Archbishop of Sherbrooke.
At the time of his appointment, Archbishop Boulanger was serving as Bishop of Amos and Rouyn-Noranda, the two dioceses having been united in persona episcopi. He succeeds the Most Reverend Luc Cyr, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke was accepted by the Holy Father last year. Archbishop Cyr served as Archbishop of Sherbrooke from 2011 to 2025. Since 16 September 2025, the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke has been under the care of the Reverend Steve Lemay, Diocesan Administrator.
Archbishop Boulanger was born in Sainte-Cécile-de-Whitton, Quebec, on 6 June 1963. He obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law in 1984 and a Bachelor of Theology in 1988 from the Université de Sherbrooke. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke on 26 October 1991. In that same year, he obtained a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Université Laval. He subsequently pursued studies in Canon Law at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, where he obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law in 2000 and a Doctorate in Canon Law in 2007.
Following his ordination to the priesthood, Archbishop Boulanger exercised parish ministry in the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke, first as associate pastor and later as pastor, from 1991 to 1998. He subsequently held a number of offices in service to the local Church, including Chancellor from 2000 to 2020, Episcopal Vicar for Canonical Affairs from 2007 to 2012, Rector of the Grand Séminaire des Saints-Apôtres from 2008 to 2012 and again from 2019 to 2020, Judicial Vicar from 2008 to 2020, and Vicar General from 2012 to 2020. He also served as pastoral moderator of the parish of Sainte-Bibiane de Richmond, Quebec, from 2015 to 2020, and as President of the Assemblée des chanceliers et chancelières du Québec from 2014 to 2020.
On 31 January 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Rouyn-Noranda. On 16 September 2023, Pope Francis also appointed him Bishop of Amos, uniting the Dioceses of Amos and Rouyn-Noranda in persona episcopi.
The Archdiocese of Sherbrooke has 34 parishes and missions. Its Catholic population of 271,000 is served by 78 diocesan priests, 52 priests in consecrated life, 20 permanent deacons, 311 men and women in consecrated life, and 34 officially mandated lay pastoral assistants.
