Born 17 November 1940 in Oshawa, Ontario, he was ordained a priest on 17 June 1972 for the Archdiocese of Toronto. On 30 April 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto, and then almost five years later, on 27 April 2002, named him Archbishop of Kingston. He was Archbishop of Kingston until his death.
Archbishop Meagher also served as President of the corporation responsible for planning World Youth Day 2002, which was held in Toronto in July 2002 following diocesan celebrations across Canada.
Most Reverend Anthony Meagher will lie in state in Saint Mary’s Cathedral, 279 Johnson Street, Kingston, Thursday, 18 January 2007, 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., and Friday, 19 January, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., there will be an interfaith vigil service at the Cathedral; the funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, also in the Cathedral. He will be buried in the family plot at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Whitby, on Saturday, 20 January, at 11:00 a.m.
