Episcopal Resignation for the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke
Monday, September 15 2025Ottawa – 15 September 2025 – Today, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend Luc Cyr, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke.
Born on 21 November 1953 in Saint-Jérôme, Québec, Archbishop Cyr was ordained to the priesthood on 29 August 1980 at Sainte-Paule Church by Bishop Charles Valois. Pope John-Paul II named him Prelate of Honour in September 1999, and appointed him as Bishop of Valleyfield on 10 May 2001. He was consecrated Bishop on 17 June of the same year at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Cecilia of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield by His Eminence Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte. On 26 July 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Sherbrooke, where he was officially installed on 29 September 2011.
Archbishop Cyr pursued higher education at Collège Marie-Victorin and Cégep de Saint-Jérôme before completing theological studies at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal and the Université de Montréal (B.Th.). He later studied spirituality in Florence, Italy (1984–1985), and moral theology at the Alphonsian Academy in Rome, where he earned his Licentiate in Theology (1985–1987).
His pastoral ministry began as vicar at Saint-Jérôme Cathedral (1980–1981) and Saint-Louis-de-France Parish in Terrebonne (1981–1984). He then served as pastor of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Parish in Blainville (1987–1994), while also accompanying seminarians in their vocational formation (1992). From 1994 to 2001, he was a pastoral animator and later Vicar General of the Diocese of Saint-Jérôme.
Archbishop Cyr has also served the Church through significant leadership roles at the provincial and national levels. He has been president of the Committee on the Laity of the Assembly of Quebec Catholic Bishops (AQCB), and since 2011, he has been a member of the AQCB Executive Committee. Within the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), he served on numerous commissions and committees, including the French Sector Episcopal Commission for Liturgy (2001–2005), as representative to Development and Peace (2002–2008), and as liaison to the Charismatic Renewal (2007–2013), as member of the Standing Committee for Relations with Movements and Associations (2011-2014), as the Quebec Regional Representative on the Permanent Council (2011-2015), and as CCCB Co-Treasurer (2015-2018).
His service has also extended internationally. In 2018, he represented the CCCB at the 2nd General Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM) in Medellín, Colombia, marking the organization’s 50th anniversary. That same year, he participated in the Synod of Bishops in Rome on “Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment” (3–28 October 2018) as the episcopal delegate for the French Sector of Canada.
The Archdiocese of Sherbrooke has 90 diocesan priests, 46 priests who are members of institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, 267 women in consecrated life, 70 men in consecrated life, 22 permanent deacons, and 21 pastoral agents serving a Catholic population of 271,000 in 38 parishes and missions.
