Letter to the Archbishop of Medellin Regarding the Recent Earthquake in Columbia

Wednesday, January 27 1999

Most Reverend Alberto Giraldo Jaramillo, PSS
Archbishop of Medellin President of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia

Your Excellency and dear friend:

The media yesterday transmitted our first images of the vast damage left by the earthquake that recently hit Colombia, especially the cities of Pereira and Armenia.

Through your kind assistance, I would like to assure the Church in Colombia, and all Colombians, of the support and solidarity of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) in these moments when your country is recovering from yet another disaster.

Please also transmit my sympathy and respectful regards to our episcopal colleagues, Most Reverend José Roberto López Londoño and Fabio Suescún Mutis, the respective Bishops of Armenia and Pereira.

Emergency relief is being organized in Canada to assist the victims of the earthquake. The Canadian government has already freed up financial contributions. As well, the CCCB has contacted the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace in order to send emergency assistance as soon as possible.

We assure Your Excellency of our prayers and our eagerness to share in solidarity and communion, as His Holiness Pope John Paul II has invited us in his recent Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in America.

Fraternally in Our Lord,

+ Jean-Claude Cardinal Turcotte
Archbishop of Montreal
President
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
