New Archbishop Named in Saint Boniface

(CCCB – Ottawa) – His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Rev. Émilius Goulet, PSS, Rector of the Canadian Pontifical College in Rome, as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Saint Boniface in Manitoba. The Archdiocese of Saint Boniface has been vacant since the death of Archbishop Antoine Hacault, PSS, in April 2000.

Archbishop-elect Goulet has been Rector at the Canadian Pontifical College since December 1999 after serving for five years as French-language General Secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB).

Born in 1933 at Saint-Isidore de Dorchester, Quebec, he studied theology at the Grand Séminaire de Saint-Boniface in Manitoba and was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1958, for the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface. In 1960, he joined the Sulpicians and continued his theological studies in Montreal, followed by studies in Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and at the École biblique et archéologique française in Jerusalem.

Father Goulet was a seminary professor of Scripture in Saint Boniface (1963-1967), Guatemala (1968-1969), Colombia (1970-1977) and Montreal (1978-1984). He was also rector of the major seminary in Manizales, Colombia (1971-1977), and provincial of the Sulpicians in Montreal (1982-1994).

The Archdiocese of Saint Boniface has a Catholic population of 101,920 served by 83 diocesan priests, 56 religious order priests, 19 permanent deacons and 355 religious sisters and brothers in 102 parishes and missions.
