New Bishop for Kamloops

(CCCB – Ottawa) – His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Msgr. David Monroe, PH, Vicar-General of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, as Bishop of Kamloops. The Diocese of Kamloops has been vacant since the resignation of Most Rev. Lawrence Sabatini, CS, September 2, 1999.

Born on April 14, 1941, in Vancouver, British Columbia, he was ordained to the priesthood on May 20, 1967, for the Archdiocese of Vancouver. He has served in several parishes since his ordination including St. John the Apostle Parish in Vancouver and has held the office of Vicar General, Acting Chancellor, Chairman of the Archdiocesan Building and Liturgical Commissions, and Editor of the BC Catholic newspaper.

Bishop-elect Monroe studied at the Seminary of Christ the King in Mission, BC, where he pursued philosophical and theological formation.

The Diocese of Kamloops has a Catholic population of 47,010 served by 14 diocesan priests, 12 religious order priests, two permanent deacons and 21 religious sisters and brothers in 79 parishes and missions.
