New Pastoral Resource from the CCCB: A Unique Resource for Celebrations of Installation and Recognition

Wednesday, September 14 2005

(CCCB – Ottawa)… The Publications Service of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has just released Celebrations of Installation and Recognition, a major new resource prepared by the National Liturgy Office under the direction of the English Sector Commission for Liturgy.

According to Father Camille Jacques, O.S.M., the director of the National Liturgy Office who coordinated the project, ‘‘what makes this book unique is that it is the only resource that offers, in a single volume, all the celebrations for installing, recognizing, commissioning, accepting and supporting all those who serve in the various ministries of the Christian community.’’

The first section of this new book offers celebrations to mark the installation of a pastor or parish administrator, and to recognize a deacon or pastoral assistant. Subsequent sections include celebrations of recognition for liturgical ministries (such as lectors and altar servers), parish and diocesan ministries (including everything from pastoral council to custodial staff), and recipients of honours and awards.

Among other interesting characteristics of the book is its flexibility. The proposed celebrations can easily be adapted to the specific needs of the community. For example, three forms of the celebration of installation of a pastor are provided to accommodate various circumstances. The celebrations of recognition might also be adapted for ecumenical use, especially in the case of ministries carried out by individuals of various Christian churches, such as pastoral work in prisons, palliative care, ministry to the sick and pastoral work in universities and colleges.

Rev. John G. Hibbard, Pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Belleville, Ontario, notes: ‘‘Celebrations of Installations and Recognition will fulfill a great need in the Roman Catholic Church. It is a compendium of those rites and celebrations that parishes have long been searching for when installing a new pastor or recognizing the various ministries entrusted to the laity. This is the first time since the Second Vatican Council that any book has brought to the priests and people of the Catholic Church the various forms for the installation, commissioning and recognition for those who minister in the Church. The index will indicate to the reader the vast array of ministry that has developed since the Council. These celebrations will not only recognize those who are commissioned in a parish to assist in the celebration of the Eucharist or who assist the orderly running of the parish, but they will also give the necessary support and affirmation that all ministers of the Church need.’’

The 372-page hardcover volume features easy-to-read text, printed in black and separated from the rubrics in red, an elegant and sturdily bound cover, illustrated section pages, and ribbon markers. It is available at CCCB Publications at the price of  $59.95. Orders may be placed online at, by phone at 1 800 769-1147, by fax at (613) 241-5090, or by e-mail at
