Synod on the New Evangelization and the Transmission of the Christian Faith: publication of preparatory document

Thursday, March 31 2011

From 7 to 28 October 2012, some 300 Bishops from around the world will come together in Rome for the XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, to reflect on the theme of “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”.  According to Pope Benedict XVI, the Synod is to be a moment to examine the journey that had been made and to resume with fresh impetus the urgent work still to be done in evangelizing today’s world. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) will eventually elect four of its members to take part in this major event in the life of the Catholic Church. Their names will be published as soon as the Holy Father has ratified their election.

The first of a series of documents relating to the Synod, the Lineamenta (from the Latin, meaning an “outline”), was recently published. This document essentially provides a common basis on which to begin reflections. Following suggestions and recommendations that will be received from the Bishops and also from other members of the Church, an Instrumentum laboris (working document) will then be produced and given to all the participants for discussion at the Synod.
