The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy

On December 8, 2015, Pope Francis presided at the opening of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in Saint Peter’s Basilica. Four days later, as part of the Jubilee, the Holy Father entrusted the American continent to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. In Canada, dioceses and eparchies have also marked the launch of the Jubilee with various diocesan and eparchial celebrations, including the opening of diocesan Doors of Mercy. The Holy Door at the Cathedral-Basilica Notre-Dame de Québec is also open for the Year of Mercy. A number of Canadian Bishops have issued Pastoral Letters to mark the Jubilee Year. The Extraordinary Jubilee will conclude November 20, 2016, on the Solemnity of Christ the King.
To help mark the Jubilee, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has published a special edition of the Gospel of Luke in a popular pocket-book format, using the official French-language liturgical translation, and which has been distributed in more than 10 French Sector dioceses across the country. A number of dioceses in the English Sector are making available a popular English-language version of the Gospel of Luke, using the Good News Translation published by the Canadian Bible Society. The Gospel of Luke speaks extensively of God’s mercy; for example, in the parables of lost sheep, the prodigal son, the rich man and Lazarus, and the good Samaritan.
The Beauty of Mercy: Pope Francis and Confession
To aid Canadian Catholics in celebrating the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy which ends this November 20, the Episcopal Commission for Doctrine of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has prepared a text entitled The Beauty of Mercy: Pope Francis and Confession. It is a series of quotations from the Holy Father on the importance and beauty of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and contains likewise words that encourage and challenge both penitents and priest confessors.
