Decree authorizing the use of three devotional titles

Sunday, November 27 2016

As unanimously agreed by the Bishops of Canada at their Plenary Assembly of 26 30 September 2016, the following devotional titles are hereby approved for popular use:

– Saint François de Laval, the first Bishop of New France who remains a model of evangelization for our country and is commemorated on 6 May in the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of Canada, patron of the Bishops of Canada;

– Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, a member of the First Nations who consecrated her virginal life to prayer and service and is commemorated on 17 April in the Proper Calendar for the Dioceses of Canada, protectress of Canada, as proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI the day she was canonized;

– Saint André Bessette (Saint Brother André), a religious of the Congregation of the Holy Cross who gave his humble life to healing the sick, comforting the poor, and encouraging families and neighours to look after the dying and those most in need, patron of family caregivers in Canada.

As we continue our journey of “pastoral conversion and witness to mercy” (Pope Francis, Apostolic Letter Misericordia et Misera, On Mercy and Peace), may these titles inspire and strengthen all the faithful of our nation in following the examples of the Saints, invoking their intercession and help, “glorifying the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” and serving the Lord in “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans, 15.6, 14.17).
